I never understood why people make a big deal about any professional sports team. They are businesses who hire their "talent" from outside the city they are presently associated with, who presist in living elsewhere and if the team/business is offered the right deal would move in a heartbeat to another city, just like they were once offered the right deal to move from New York City.
Low numbers in voter turnout is, unhappily, not unique to any city these days. A lot of it is in the selection of choices, the favored one too often seems to be none of the above as there is small faith that one candidate is any better or effective than any other and making any special effort to vote is regarded as an imposition on time that can be spent more profitably elsewhere.
The pre-election campaign of negative ads, basically why the opposition sucks, rather than focusing on what the candidate will do if elected does wonders for reinforcing the general apathy.
